The BWV is a professional body of the German insurance industry that has the following aims and functions:

Active promotion of insurance training in the insurance industry (Certified Insurer, Insurance Specialist by examination) and in related areas within the framework of the educational policy of the Association of German Insurers (GDV) and the Employers Association of German Insurance Companies (agv).

Development of trainees by means of the teaching of basic practical knowledge and more advanced general knowledge in the course of training leading to the qualification as Insurance Fellow (DVA) that is provided by the German Insurance Academy (DVA), and institution for which the BWV is responsible.

Development and distribution of teaching and learning materials as well as information media, in order to ensure that the criteria for the provision of training are as uniform as possible.

Support of the GDV and the agv in educational matters.

Information and advice for all those institutions and persons in the insurance industry that have some responsibility for insurance training and further education.

Co-operation with institutions that are concerned with educational matters.

Granting the title "Insurance Specialist" (BWV), together with the formulation of regulations and the administration of examinations under its own auspices.
