Background. Non-state educational body the INSTITUTE OF INSURANCE (former title – the Academy of Insurance) of the city of St.Petersburg was registered in August 1993 and re-registered as an Institute of Insurance in January 1995. The Institute of Insurance was established by St.Petersburg State University, Union of Insurers, Chamber of Audit and by the biggest insurance companies of St.Petersburg. The Institute of Insurance has a state licence on the educational activities in the field of higher professional education N 16-229 dated 22.05.1996.

The purpose of education is training of well qualified professionals, competent in the field of insurance as well as in the vast spectre of the modern economic problems, getting sophisticated theoretical knowledge and good practical skills. They ought to acquire the knowledge of Russian insurance market that is supposed to help foreign insurers to work in this country. The other important goal is re-training and qualification improvement of teachers and insurance specialists. Those goals are reached due to the organisation of two forms of education – long-term and short-term. Long-term training (first and second higher education) is held on the following specialities: finance and credit, management, marketing, accounting and audit with the specialisation "insurance”. Those who have already the higher economic education could get the speciality "Mathematical methods in Operational Research” with specialisation "Mathematics of insurance”. Short-term training and retraining system is reached through the regular short-term courses, work-shop tables, consultations, national and international conferences and seminars organisation, etc.

The lectures and seminars are held by the teaching staff of the Institute of Insurance and the academics of St. Petersburg State University involving the highly qualified professors and insurance experts from the leading institutions (academic universities, Federal and St. Petersburg Regional Department of Rosstrachknadsor, State Tax Inspection, biggest insurance companies, etc.) of St.Petersburg, Russia and other countries.

International Contacts. The Institute of Insurance co-operates with the leading educational bodies all over the world of learning that are assisting the Institute in the library formation and curriculum design. United Kingdom Chartered Insurance Institute, Federal US Institute of Insurance together with Actuarial Society of the USA, Insurance Institute of Denmark, French National Institute of Insurance are involved into the conferences and seminars organisation and textbooks exchanges. Swedish Institute of Insurance supported by the Swedish governmental body (BITZ and SIDA) helped the Institute of Insurance to develop Informational-Publishing Centre, provided teaching-staff scholarships for the launching of new textbooks in insurance and assistance in the Institute management. Norwegian Academy of Insurance contributing in the Marine-Insurance text-book, took care about the English Insurance dictionary and text-book. Actuarial Society and Government Actuary’s Department of the United Kingdom together with City University (London) and Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh) helped to organise two Actuarial Schools 1994-1997. Today the Institute of Insurance together with Moscow State University, Financial Academy of the Government of the Russian Federation, St.Petersburg University of Economics and Finance takes part in the TACIS Project "Insurance Training. Part II”.

Library and Informational-Publishing Centre have high-tech soft-and hardware provision The library acquires more than 1500 volumes of general economic and specialised insurance literature as well as periodicals. Informational centre publishes textbooks and periodicals of the Institute of Insurance.
